North Shore - Bay of Islands Profile

Offering a scenic view of the Bay of Islands, a marine resource that attracted
much of the original settlement to the area, the Bay of Islands North Shore is comprised of the following six communities:

  • Hughes Brook,
  • Irishtown-Summerside,
  • Meadows,
  • Gillams,
  • McIvers and
  • Cox’s Cove.

These communities are located on Sir Palliser’s Trail, Route 440 of the Provincial Highway system, with the exception of Hughes Brook whose main street is off the main Route roadway.

With a population of about 3,750 people, the North Shore boasts both scenic beauty and a quaint community atmosphere. The appeal of this area of the Province is that you can enjoy the tranquility of a rustic setting, with the conveniences of a more urban city close by. There are numerous nature trails and outdoor activities that are enjoyed in this area. Residents of the North Shore have strong ties to heritage and culture and display local talent in local activities.
