South Shore - Bay of Islands Profile
On the southern end of Zone 8 is the sub-zone of the Bay of Islands South Shore.
There are 5 communities in this sub-zone:
- Massey Drive,
- Mount Moriah,
- Humber Arm
South,
- York Harbour and
- Lark Harbour.
Nestled across the Bay of Islands from the
North Shore, the South Shore also boasts incredible scenery and many natural
attractions.
The South Shore has a population of approximately 4,690 people. The settlement of this sub-zone is similar to that of the North Shore in that it was first sighted by Jacques
Cartier in 1534 however, was not surveyed and charted until 1767 by Captain James
Cook.
The Provincial roadway, Route 450, which runs through the South Shore, is
fittingly named Captain Cook’s Trail. All communities with the exception of Massey
Drive are located on this highway system.
Prominent in the area are the Blow Me Down Mountains which rise 763 metres above
the ocean. The landscape on the South Shore is quite spectacular and uniquely caused
by early glaciations. Along with the landscape and scenery in the region, the South
Shore has a friendly population, local artistic talents and natural amenities that attract
visitors to the area. |
