Jackson's Arm
Jackson’s Arm is one of the oldest recorded settlements in White Bay. It was first
settled approximately 130-145 years ago by John Wicks of Christchurch, England via
Joe Batt’s Arm. The Town of Jackson’s Arm was incorporated in 1981.
Fishing is the main
occupation in Jackson’s
Arm. The town has two
fish plants in operation,
employing more than 100
people.
Public roads to the area
were not established until
1962, then making the
community more
accessible. Following this
public access, the hydro
service was installed in 1966 and telephone service in 1968.
Despite the economic changes in this age, the Town of Jackson’s Arm is still surviving
with a population of approximately 400 people, a significant growth from the 36
residents in 1857. |
