Environment

The Province of Newfoundland and Labrador is rich in natural and cultural resources and has enormous potential in environmental industries such as Forestry, Fishery and Agriculture.  The environment we live in is under pressure. Economic development brings with it many challenges and we must strive to find a balance for all uses of the environment.  Most of the activities taking place in Zone 8 require a healthy ecosystem.

It is for this reason that HEDB has placed great emphasis on the environment in this and past SEPs.  It is also under this premise that HEDB began the work with development of the CEE years ago and the area is now known as the Provincial CEE.

New controls that will perpetuate basic foundations for development are required.  They should not be viewed as obstructing economic development but rather as fostering scenery, wildlife, special plant material, bogs, lakes, rivers, mountains, prehistoric sites, historic sites, cultural features and other natural and cultural assets of the region.

As a result, HEDB has identified several areas of key importance in the environment that will help address issues that are or could be negative in the future. These include the need for a land use plan, creation of a data system for municipal infrastructure and the creation of a solid waste plan for the zone and west coast.
