Cox's Cove

The final community on your journey down Sir Palliser’s Trail is the community of Cox’s Cove, approximately 44 km from Corner Brook.

A fishing and logging community on the south side of Middle Arm in the Bay of
Islands, Cox’s Cove was originally settled in 1840 by Thomas O’Grady
together with George, John and William Cox, all herring and lobster fishermen.
By 1911, Cox’s Cove supported a herring processing plant, a school, and
a store.

In the 1930s the Island Timber Company set up a pit-prop mill in Cox’s Cove, employing 250 men. The mill was eventually phased out (although pulpwood cutting continued on a small scale) and the community had no major employer until 1970. In the 1940s the services at Cox’s Cove included a nursing centre and telegraph office. The community was also a regular port of call for the northern coastal boats.
